Students from the Dartmouth Energy Alliance got a sneak-preview tour of the new home of the Irving Institute in late January.

From the Institute Director

I cannot believe we are heading into the final few weeks of winter term classes! This term has been a whirlwind for me and the students. I am loving being back in the classroom, teaching ENVS 12: Energy and the Environment. I really appreciate seeing Dartmouth students open their eyes to the energy system. They are smart, passionate, and they want sustainable energy systems which will survive in our climate-changing world. We have invited experts into class to help stretch the students' perspectives about the interplay of policy, finance, technology, and other fields. The students are sharp, critical, and want change NOW. I appreciate their enthusiasm and am inspired by their desire to make a positive impact on the world.

The Institute is also in the process of moving into our new home on the West End of campus. We will be introducing the energy and sustainability features of our new home through tours, a website and print guide and we look forward to welcoming you into this beautiful, energy-efficient building soon!

Dartmouth Humanitarian Engineering students test the solar water heater prototype headed for sub-Saharan Africa in the Arctic temperatures of New Hampshire in early January!

A Dartmouth Humanitarian Engineering project group led by Noah Daniel ’22 and Ethan Aulwes ’22 has spent the better part of the last year prototyping a solar water heater that, if successfully implemented, aims to help school kitchens in Uganda — and potentially throughout sub-Saharan Africa — save money, improve health, and reduce carbon output.

In November 2021, Dartmouth Energy Alliance members Alexander Huang-Menders ‘25, Carson Miller ‘25, Sam Barton ‘25, and John DeForest ‘25 participated in the Massachusetts Institute of Technology’s eighth annual EnergyHack. Organized by the MIT Energy and Climate Club, the competition challenges college students from across the country to solve challenges facing the energy industry–all in one weekend.

The team's objective was to work on decarbonizing gas pipelines, from production to use, as well as improving efficiency and safety. "By the end of the weekend," Alexander said, "my team could tell you everything there was to know about liquefied natural gas.”
