Students from the Dartmouth Energy Alliance and the Dartmouth Outing Club's Environmental Stewardship Division toured the Lyme, NH home of Institute Senior Advisor Stephen Doig ’82 in late January to learn about the systems that power the highly energy-efficient, off-grid house.

From the Institute Director

"Fluffy socks!" "Walking my dog!" "Running!" "Layers of blankets!"

At the outset of the first live discussion session of the Irving Institute's Energy 101 course, we asked participants to introduce themselves and share how they have been keeping warm without using gas, oil, or electricity in the VERY cold weather that has descended upon Hanover recently.

In part, this question served as a fun icebreaker to help our Zoom group get to know each other as we started our four-week journey into the basics of energy. But it also sought to foreground one of the main goals of both Energy 101 and the Irving Institute itself – helping people become aware of the impact of energy in our daily lives in order to help us make more informed decisions for the future.

We're having a great time learning and thinking about the foundations of energy with this enthusiastic group of Dartmouth students and community members who are bringing their thoughtfulness, curiosity, insight, and terrific ideas to keep warm when it's -11 out! And we're looking forward to thinking and learning about energy and how it shapes and is shaped by our decisions through our education, research, and engagement activities throughout this term and beyond — we hope you'll join us for these opportunities.

The Irving Institute's Clean Energy Finance Bootcamp, led by NYC Energy Efficiency Corporation CEO Curtis Probst, introduced undergraduates to the role of finance in the energy transition.

In late January, New York City Energy Efficiency Corporation CEO Curtis Probst and nearly 20 Dartmouth students spent most of a weekend exploring the ways that finance can be a barrier to or enabler of greater adoption of clean energy.

The Clean Energy Finance Bootcamp aimed to familiarize participants with some of the financial techniques for bringing clean energy to markets as well as the basic financial models for evaluating clean energy opportunities. Students also learned about some of the key opportunities and challenges societies face in transitioning to clean energy.
