From the Institute Director
|
It is absolutely wonderful to see students and colleagues back on campus. I had missed everyone so much and feel lucky that the College is working so hard to keep all safe. This fall, we’ll continue to run our two regular event series — New Energy and the Dartmouth Energy Collaborative Energy Seminars — virtually. The Irving Institute staff are enjoying the opportunities to reconnect with our students, friends, and colleagues. We had a great time meeting so many new students during Orientation in the first part of September. And Dartmouth students are excited to engage with the energy and society challenges that face our world. I’ve also had the chance to meet and walk and talk with many of the new faculty members who have joined our community over the past two years — what a thrill to discover the wealth of creativity and enthusiasm they bring to the table. I’m looking forward to collaborating with them as well as reconnecting with all our old friends as we work to expand Dartmouth’s impact as a leader in energy and society. We look forward seeing you soon — around campus and in the new building next year! ~Elizabeth

Erin Mayfield, Sustainable Systems Researcher, Joins Thayer School of Engineering Faculty
|
Erin Mayfield has joined the Thayer School of Engineering faculty as the Hodgson Family Assistant Professor. As a sustainable systems researcher, Mayfield studies human-environmental-engineered system transitions in the context of climate change. Her multidisciplinary research—which draws on the fields of environmental engineering, data science, operations research, and policy—aims to develop computational tools to facilitate decision-making. Dr. Mayfield comes to Dartmouth from Princeton University where she was a post-doctoral researcher, working on, among other things, the Net Zero America project. Read more about Dr. Mayfield

Dartmouth Energy Collaborative Fall Series Kicks Off With a Look at Energy and Dartmouth's Built Environment

With the completion of the new home of the Irving Institute for Energy and Society on the campus' West End on the horizon (anticipated opening in January 2022), the fall Dartmouth Energy Collaborative (DEC) Energy Seminar Series theme: "Building Sustainable, Resilient Futures: Perspectives on Buildings and Energy," is a timely area of focus. The connections between buildings and energy aren't just a campus concern, of course —the construction and operation of residential and commercial buildings represent about 40 percent of energy consumption in the US and globally. Therefore, how we build, where we build, and how we operate our homes and commercial buildings are critical considerations in averting the worst effects of climate change. The fall series looks at buildings and energy from a variety of angles. While the kickoff session on Tuesday, September 21 stayed close to home, with Dartmouth Sustainability Director Rosi Kerr '98 exploring the past, present, and future of energy and the built environment on campus, our experiences as an energy system aren't specific to Hanover, New Hampshire. "I think of Dartmouth as kind of a microcosm of anywhere in the world," explained Kerr. "We have all the challenges that Mumbai, or Boston, or San Francisco have, just on a different scale."
