News from the Arthur L. Irving Institute for Energy and Society at Dartmouth: November 2020

From the Director

The end of a remarkable fall term at Dartmouth is upon us. Despite the many challenges we face, I am grateful for the ways that we've been able to maintain — and expand — our connections with students, staff, faculty, and alumni as well as colleagues and friends around the country and the world. On behalf of the Irving Institute, I wish you a peaceful and healthy Thanksgiving holiday. We are thankful for your ongoing support and friendship and we look forward to seeing you in the new year.

~ Elizabeth J. Wilson

On October 13, the Dartmouth community celebrated a milestone in the completion of the Irving Institute for Energy and Society's new home: the placement of the final beam, marking the end of the structural phase of the project. While public health considerations made an onsite celebration impossible, faculty, staff, students, alumni, and friends marked the occasion with a virtual topping-off ceremony, featuring remarks from President Hanlon and Institute Director Elizabeth Wilson, as well as a 'fly-through' video offering a glimpse of what the completed building will look like. Read more about the topping off and find links to the videos aired at the virtual ceremony here.

Remote Summer Research Connects Dartmouth Students With a Range of Topics

As the world locked down in an attempt to prevent the spread of COVID-19 in the first part of 2020, the Irving Institute, like many organizations, adjusted to the realities of a remote-based world. This shift to an online space limited opportunities for onsite laboratory-based work; it also resulted in a summer term rich in hands-on, outcomes-oriented student energy and society research across the disciplines. Beyond the discoveries Dartmouth students made, the research opportunities led them to develop new skills and insights. Read more about student research at the Irving Institute.

Energy 101 Wraps Up Fall Remote Series

In 2018 the Irving Institute for Energy and Society began offering Energy 101, a free, not-for-credit course providing learners with a foundation in the history, concepts, and challenges of energy. Typically sessions were held in person in a traditional classroom setting on campus. Fall 2020 had different plans, however. Read more about Energy 101 Online.

New Energy Early-Career Researchers Series Continues in 2021

With a lively and well-attended presentation of his research on the spatial, racial, and socioeconomic dimensions of residential energy efficiency, the University of Michigan's Tony Reames closed out our fall New Energy series on November 18. The series, a partnership between the Irving Institute and professors at 15 other colleges and universities in the US and Europe, provides a forum for early-career researchers to share their recent research. The series will return for winter term on January 20 when Deborah Seligsohn of Villanova University gives a talk titled, "Reframing US-China Climate Relations: Competition as the Key to Climate Mitigation." Learn more about Dr. Selighson and view the slate of presenters for winter and spring 2021 here.
