News from the Arthur L. Irving Institute for Energy and Society at Dartmouth: June 2020

From the Director

The last few months have been marked by rapid transitions to new ways of teaching, learning, collaborating, and being. Time seems to be dragging on and flying by. After a hard few months of the COVID-19 pandemic, social and civic unrest, and the deep challenges facing our American societies, we find ourselves at the start of summer term. A spring term pivot filled with new online classes and programming seems already far away. This time is challenging, yet I am continually moved by the deep empathy and care people have shown one another (including my former students Julia Eagles and Abby Finnis). Future uncertainty remains, and yet we at the Irving Institute will continue to support our students, faculty, staff, and wider community in advancing an affordable, sustainable, reliable energy future to benefit all.

A Message on Racial Justice and Energy and Society

The Arthur L. Irving Institute for Energy and Society stands in solidarity with our Black students, staff, alumni, and with Black people across the United States and the world. We would like to amplify the statements made by our colleagues in the Dartmouth Consortium of Studies of Race, Migration, and Sexuality and stand as allies with our Black students. We encourage everyone in the Irving Institute community to read these statements, educate themselves on the issues, learn more about what can be done to effectuate progress, and to take personal responsibility to dismantle racist structures in their own lives and communities.

Celebrating Our Newest Energy Alumni

While health and safety made it impossible to celebrate the Class of 2020 in person this year, we are so proud of all of our new graduates! Dartmouth alumni are an incredible community and we wish you the best in your next adventures and hope that you'll keep in touch.

We caught up with some new alumni who were engaged in energy in different ways during their Dartmouth careers to learn more about their experiences and find out what they're up to next. Read about some of our new energy graduates.

Dartmouth/CRREL Arctic Energy Research Project Funding Renewed

Dr. Stephen Doig, research director at the Arthur L. Irving Institute for Energy and Society, recently announced a successful bid for another $1.5 million for an ongoing set of Arctic energy research projects. The initiative, a collaboration between researchers at the Irving Institute, the Thayer School of Engineering, and the Cold Regions Research and Engineering Laboratory, is focused on improving energy services, delivery, storage, and mobility for military bases in the Arctic. The Irving Institute has funded 11 student energy and society projects for summer 2020, ranging from support for an unpaid internship at a solar energy company to a research project on energy grids in communities at high risk for wildfires to solarizing another of the Dartmouth Outing Club's cabins. Learn more about the projects here.

Career Planning in Uncertain Times

The post-college job search is as much a part of the typical Dartmouth spring term as Green Key and Commencement. This was, of course, no typical spring term. While all of our on-campus rituals were canceled, postponed, or delivered via Zoom, members of the Class of 2020 had to balance remote coursework with career searches in the middle of public health and economic crises. In response to these challenging conditions, the Irving Institute launched two virtual programs to help students looking for post-graduation energy career opportunities — Alumni Sparks Career Conversations and a series of drop-in energy and sustainability career office hours. Learn more about these new programs here.

And if you have job opportunities at your company, please share them! Dartboard, an online job and internship portal managed by Dartmouth's Center for Professional Development, is available for you to post job and internship openings for Dartmouth students and alumni.
