News from the Arthur L. Irving Institute for Energy and Society at Dartmouth: August 2020

From the Director

The Irving Institute hosted a full slate of remote programming over the summer. One particular highlight was July’s panel discussion on stimulus spending and the future of the electric grid. We were thrilled to be able to convene some of the nation’s leading experts in policy, industry, and cybersecurity to map out a post-COVID recovery that addresses critically important economic, health, racial justice, and climate challenges. While we continue to work toward a return to normalcy, I’ve been encouraged and inspired by the different ways our energy community connects, shares, and imagines a brighter future — even at a distance.

The Arthur L. Irving Institute for Energy and Society will fund seven energy and society research projects during the 2020-21 academic year as part of its seed grant program. "We're excited to announce this year's seed grant recipients," said Dr. Stephen Doig, Institute research director, "because we've managed to broaden the array of disciplines represented and are bringing new people into the energy and society fold at Dartmouth." This is the third round of seed grant awards for the Institute. Read more.

Panel Urges Major Investment in the Grid of the Future

On July 14, the Dartmouth Energy Collaborative (the Irving Institute, the Thayer School, the Revers Center, and the Sustainability Office), convened a panel of five energy experts to discuss the challenges and opportunities presented by prioritizing stimulus spending in the green energy sector. During the "Energy Stimulus: Investing in the Electric Power Grid of the Future" panel, experts spoke about what they viewed as the critical investments that should be made in the electric grid and then engaged in a lively discussion with all participants to scope out a vision for a clean, reliable, resilient electric grid. The Irving Institute's New Home: Construction Update

Construction of the new home of the Arthur L. Irving Institute for Energy and Society continues on schedule, despite the pandemic-related disruptions of spring and summer. Things are really starting to take shape! If you walk down to campus’s West End, you'll see a massive crane at work, putting in place the steel beams that will make up the building’s structure. Additionally, the project team — construction crew, architects, engineers and others —recently gathered in Hanover to conduct performance testing on two mocked-up sections of the building. The testing ensures that the building will be air tight, wind resistant, and water proof. The test structures performed well, aligning with or performing better than the engineers’ specifications.
